| DFO Canada - Canada's Ocean Strategy The sustainable development and integrated management of our oceans requires the help and ideas of local communities, industries, Aboriginal peoples, provinces and territories, environmental groups and other interests. Canadians across the country have demonstrated a high level of commitment to the conservation, protection, and responsible management of Canada's oceans. Canada's Oceans Strategy will assist in strengthening this collaborative effort.
The Strategy's accompanying document, the Policy and Operational Framework for Integrated Management of Estuarine, Coastal and Marine Environments in Canada, is a working document for Canada's oceans community. It is intended to foster discussion about Integrated Management approaches. It sets out policy in the legislative context, along with concepts and principles that will underpin the implementation of new integrated management approaches to oceans governance. |

| Fisheries Resource Conservation Council The Fisheries Resource Conservation Council (FRCC) was created in 1993 to form a partnership between scientific and academic expertise, and all sectors of the fishing industry. Together, Council members make public recommendations to the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans on such issues as total allowable catches (TACs) and other conservation measures for the Atlantic fishery. The Council is responsible for advising the Minister on Canada's position with respect to straddling and transboundary stocks under the jurisdiction of international bodies such as the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO). The Council also provides advice in the areas of scientific research and assessment priorities. |

| Pauly , Dr. Daniel Dr Pauly became a Professor at UBC's Fisheries Centre in 1994, after many years at the International Centre for Living Aquatic Resource Management (ICLARM), then in Manila, Philippines.
His research, inspired by field work in the 1970s in West Africa and Indonesia, and mostly conducted at ICLARM, was originally devoted to the development of a methodology for tropical fish stock assessment, disseminated through courses in four languages in Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America. He also worked on the comparative study of growth and mortality in fish and invertebrates, both in the wild and in culture. This research program yielded empirical models (e.g., 'Pauly's M-equation') and software (e.g., 'ELEFAN') that are still widely used today. |

| European Commission - Fisheries - Common Fisheries Policy The common fisheries policy (CFP), is the European Union's instrument for the management of fisheries and aquaculture. It was created to manage a common resource and to meet the obligation set in the original Community Treaties. Because fish are a natural and mobile resource they are considered as common property. In addition, the Treaties which created the Community stated that there should be a common policy in this area, that is, common rules adopted at Community level and implemented in all Member States. |

| Ecology Letters Ecology Letters is a forum for the very rapid publication of original research in ecology. Manuscripts relating to the ecology of all taxa, in any biome and geographic area will be considered, and priority will be given to those papers exploring or testing clearly stated hypotheses. The journal publishes concise papers that merit urgent publication by virtue of their originality, general interest and their contribution to new developments in ecology. We discourage purely descriptive papers and those merely confirming or extending results of previous work. |

| The Starving Ocean We thought that the ocean was an inexhaustible source of food. And that it would always regenerate more creatures to replace those we remove. But today's ocean is simply failing to produce fish as it did in the past, and the reason increasingly appears to be an overall decline in marine nutrient cycling .Simple starvation now increasingly limits the growth of fish and other marine life. "Overfishing" appears to have affected not only the targeted species, but the ecosystem in general...and ramifications of this disturbance may extend as far as the ocean-atmosphere CO2 balance . It is becoming obvious that we have relied for too long on our initial misperceptions about how the living ocean 'works.' The articles on this website are an attempt to fit the puzzle pieces together in a different way, and to stimulate debate. The standard view still holds that the sea contains plenty of food for young cod in the North Atlantic...but reality clashes with theory |
